Travelling to Appenzell
Appenzell is easy to reach from the Hotel kommod in Liechtenstein. It takes about an hour to drive from the hotel to Appenzell through the spectacular beauty of the east Switzerland countryside with its idyllic villages and green hills. Alternatively you can travel by public transport. If you take the train, which will bring you right to the middle of Appenzell, you can relax and enjoy your surroundings.
A walk through the picturesque village of Appenzell
The first stop of your trip should be the village of Appenzell itself which is famous for its colourful houses and lovingly preserved façades. A stroll along the narrow alleyways and across the historic squares is like a journey back in time. A visit to the spacious square is certainly worth-while. The traditional open-air assembly is held here every year, one of the oldest and most direct forms of democracy.
A further highlight is the church of St. Mauritius where you are certain to be impressed by the frescoes and gorgeous interior decoration. You should also allow time for a visit to the Appenzell Museum where you can learn more about the history, culture and traditions of the region.
Nature in the region
Appenzell is a real paradise for lovers of the outdoors and nature. Many different hiking trails invite you to investigate the nature of the region. The hiking trail on the Hoher Kasten, from the top of which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Rhine valley and the surrounding alps, is particularly popular. You can take the cable car for a quick and easy way to reach the summit.
A further highlight is a hike to the Seealpsee lake, an idyllic mountain lake surrounded by green meadows and imposing rock walls. The way to the lake is well organised and suitable for all fitness levels. Once you reach the lake you can picnic on its shores, swim in its clear water or just enjoy the peace and the beauty of nature.
Culinary treats
No visit to Appenzell would be complete without trying the local specialties. The region is known for Appenzell cheese with its distinctive flavour and made by a secret recipe. Visit one of the cheese dairies and get a close-up view of how this famous cheese is made.
The Appenzell Alpenbitter is another must. This herbal liqueur, which is made from 42 different herbs, is a long tradition as well as a treat. A guided tour of the Appenzell Alpenbitter distillery will provide you with an insight into the production and history of this unique drink.
You can visit one of the many traditional hostelries for a typical regional lunch. Try dishes such as Rösti (potato cakes), Älplermagronen (rich macaroni cheese) or the hearty Appenzeller Siedwürste (boiled sausage) which will introduce you to the culinary variety of the region.
Experience regional culture and tradition
Appenzell is rich in tradition. A range of festivals and events deeply rooted in tradition take place throughout the year. One particular experience is a visit to an “Alpabzug” in the autumn when the cattle are brought down to the villages from the mountain pastures. The animals are brightly decorated and the general atmosphere is one of good humour, music and dancing.
A further highlight is the “Silvesterschlausen”, a traditional New Year festival celebrated on 31 December and 13 January. Men dressed as "Chläuse" go from house to house wishing the inhabitants good fortune in the coming year. The artistically designed costumes and masks are an impressive testimonial to the craftsmanship and customs of the region.
